Embrace… Multiple Listings Services.
Man, the “Embrace” series of blog posts is like shooting fish in a barrel. It’s just too easy sometimes…
Enter Multiple Listings Services (MLS). These are very common internet-based databases used that contain regional real estate listings. If you’ve ever been interested in the real estate market before, chances are you’ve visited one of these sites.
Techdirt shares a story about the Canadian MLS website that is resisting customer feedback that suggests that their site could use a bit of work. Hold the phone, its not just any customer feedback, its computer-geek customers that actually put in some time to redesign the site, FOR FREE. What thanks do they get in return? A very pleasant cease and desist letter.
I’ve been a visitor of the site, mainly because its the only game in town if you live in Canada, but I’ve never been pleased with the format, organization and functionality of the product. Quite frankly though, I’m glad to hear that they’re not open to change or embracing the value of the open source community. Why? Because eventually, they’ll go the way of the Dodo bird, much like the rest of the companies and individuals sitting on cash cow businesses who are afraid of change, believe that they can ride their past success through a paradigm shift and bully their customers into believing that they know best.
