Embrace… Stupid Precedent.

19 June, 2008 (15:24) | Accountability, Odds and Ends

There was once a time when Canada was safe haven from absurd law suits (like this, and why not, even this), but one event may serve to change that. According to the Globe and Mail, a 12-year old successfully argued in the Quebec Superior Court (not so Superior anymore) that her father was wrongful in his punishment of barring her from a school trip after she posted photos of herself on an Internet dating site. I’m no expert on parenting, but I think what the father did in this case was actually pretty reasonable. Ok, let’s just set aside the fact that most dating sites require participants to be 18 years of age. And forget the fact that all the child missed was a school trip. Oh, and also, never mind the fact that some scumbag lawyer actually took this case on. Based on the facts provided, and without knowing the full family situation, I think its safe to say that the father did what he thought was reasonable. Why wasn’t the Quebec Superior Court doing the same?
